Hungary is far from the only place where independent journalism is in danger. But why is it that here it appeared to be especially easy to crush news organizations that for years had been largely independent from political forces? Has this been the fault of aggressive politicians? Should the shortsighted media owners and managers be blamed? Or was it the journalists themselves who created this whole mess?

András Pethő, co-founder of the investigative center Direkt36 and former reporter with the BBC News and The Washington Post Magazine, is trying to give answers to these questions.
