2009. augusztus 2-ról 3-ra virradóra saját, kislétai házában, álmában agyonlőtték Balogh Máriát, és súlyosan megsebesítették tizenhárom éves lányát. A bűncselekmény egy hat életet kioltó és tucatnyi sérültet követelő gyilkosságsorozat utolsó epizódja volt. Az áldozatok valamennyien cigányok voltak. 1944-ben ugyanezen az egyetlen éjszakán gyilkolták meg az auschwitz-birkenaui haláltáborban addig életben maradt több mint háromezer romát és szintit.
Különleges tanúságtételt tesz az 1944-es tragédiáról Fahidi Éva, aki azon az éjszakán maga is a birkenaui tábor foglya volt.

Come and join us in remembering the victims of Pharrajimos, the ‘Holocaust of the Roma’ that culminated in the killing of nearly 3000 Roma and Sinti during the night of August 2 to 3, 1944 at the death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. In a tragic coincidence, 65 years later, on the same date in 2009, Balog Mária, a Romani woman was shot dead and her then 13 year-old daughter seriously wounded in their own house at Kisléta by a death squad whose aim was to murder Gypsies out of racial hatred. It was the final act of their rampage that had left six people, including a five-year old boy dead and many others injured, before they were caught and sentenced to life in prison.
Special testimony by Ms. Éva Fahidi who witnessed the mass killing in Birkenau in 1944.
The prayer will be presided over by Fülöp Kocsis, Greek Catholic metropolite, archbishop of Hajdúdorog.
